Roger Simons xc’s new wing
On Saturday April 5th, Gene and Neil went up to launch carrying a visiting pilot (Scot)and his new wife to do a tandem. On the ride up Gene said it didn’t look so promising, and Neil (me) said the wind was so strong blowing north over the Kohala Mountains that it might be wise to not fly today. However, when we got to launch Roger Simons was up over Honaunau Elementary asking about about a dragon thermal he was encountering. He asked the elevation of the school, I gave him a low estimate 800 feet (it is more like 1200). I suggested he grab the thermal, which he did. He worked his way back to launch and proceeded to go out over the Pali and then the ocean. Meanwhile the rest of us launch. It was sporty air with 1,000 feet per minute lift surrounded by 1100 feet per minute sink! After flying around for well over an hour we all flew over the ocean.
